I just finished reading through the Deluxe Explorer’s Edition of Savage Worlds. The book is interesting in that it distills your typical Core rulebook and removes all the fluff to get at the really crunchy bits and get you on your way to gaming.
Savage Worlds’ motto is “Fast, Furious, Fun!” and the book does a good job of getting you prepped and ready to run a game very quickly. After reading, I ran through a few mock combats with both the pre-generated characters and with a few Deadlands: Reloaded characters my group rolled up when we were testing character building. Here are a few initial impressions on the system:
- It’s Fast: Savage Worlds is insanely fast! My mock combats typically took less than 10-15 minutes, and coming from 4e D&D, that’s a huge time difference. We’re happy for one round to take only 15 minutes. The decreased length of combat allows for more combats, more roleplay, and that in itself excites me.
- It’s Furious: Savage worlds are, well, savage. My best tip for anyone starting out: Get the drop on your opponent and avoid fair fights at all costs. There are great rules for fighting dirty, from throwing sand in an opponent’s eyes to tricking them into turning their back to you. Use your creativity to your advantage because the rules are in place for it. I say this because in every straight up 1v1 combat I tried, both parties were very hurt by the end. Wounds are vicious, and can take quite a while to heal. Additionally, a stray shot from firing into melee can simply melt an ally where they stand… I had one situation where I insta-killed an ally on a missed shot with a shotgun.
- It just might be Fun: Pinnacle Entertainment owns Savage Worlds. I was unclear on how to get started with the new system, so I hopped on their forums to get some ideas. The people there pointed me to the Combat Survival Guide and a few one-shot test drive sessions. I was awestruck by all the free goodies. Savage Worlds does a great job of easing newbies into the hobby instead of throwing a book full of rules and saying, “Figure it out.” I’m confident that a very new group of gamers could hop right into Savage Worlds and have a great time with little prep.
I’m very excited to start running this system for the group. I think we’re going to enjoy the speedy combats and the best part is if the system sticks for everyone, we can import all types of settings, but that post is for another time. Overall, I’m very excited for Savage Worlds.
